Amsterdam – May 10

Photos from the night of May 9th.

Today we took a little stroll through Amsterdam before venturing over to the Rijk Museum.

Great story about the Victoria Hotel. When the hotel was built the couple that lived in the middle house (the brownstone in the center) did not want to sell. So the hotel was built around the house. After the couple passed away the hotel bought the property but left the facade of their home the same.

One of Rembrandt’s most famous works known as the Night Watch is housed at the Rijk Museum. We had a wonderful conversation with one of the staff members who described how the painting is currently being restored. Up to this point the process has taken seven years, and only a fraction of the work has been completed. The first five years was research on how to best complete the process. Restoration typically takes place every fifty years. While the work is in process the painting is behind a glass wall.
