Basel – April 29, 2026

The day started in Zurich, and after another wonder breakfast we took separate paths to the train station. Robin and I took the tram to the main station and Bonnie and Mark attempted to take an Uber from the hotel. And boy do they have a story to tell. We have already heard it and are not sure that we believe it!!

We were all together again for the 10:08 AM train to Basel. Such a smooth ride! Views alternated between graffiti and pastoral hillsides but you will see more of the latter. Our paths diverged again as Mark and Bonnie had a much less eventful Uber ride to the hotel and we had an adventurous walk with luggage over cobblestones while darting to avoid buses, bikes and trams.

Our hotel in Basel

The afternoon was spent exploring the Basel Old Town and the sights included the Rhine River, Rathaus, Marktplatz and Munster Cathedral. The most intriguing site was watching the traditional, current driven ferry cross the Rhine guided by a cable. The Rathaus is the city hall painted in a stunning red and is located in the heart of the city. Marktplatz is the adjacent municipal plaza that was adorned with a farmers market and food trucks where we found our mid-day snack. The 800 year old Munster Cathedral is ornamented with colorful roof tiles and a wide variety of sculptural elements.

Hidden beneath our hotel is an archeological treasure. You can view the old Basel city walls dating from the 11th and 13th century. Robin and I explored the old walls which are interpreted with a variety of reader boards and display cases.
